5 Amazing Things People Managed Right After Being Left For Dead

Leslie Coffelt Saved President Truman’s Life Despite Having Already Been Shot To Death

We’re seeing a renewed push for Puerto Rico to become a state, which is only fair considering years non-representation and wanton acts of Mel Gibson. There’s also been an alternative push for total Puerto Rican independence, a push that’s now much weaker than the statehood movement. Puerto Rico’s probably perfectly fine with a fair chunk of Americans forgetting the independence movement ever existed, considering some of the ghosts of beefs past floating out there. Beefs like, oh, firing on the National Guard, opening fire in the House of Representatives, and, oh, trying to assassinate the President.

This guy.

It was November 1950, and Harry Truman was staying in Blair House, a D.C. residence great for hosting guests or staying at when the White House was being renovated. Puerto Rican nationalists Griselio Torresola and Oscar Collazo approached the building, planning to kill the President to raise awareness for their cause. As with most awareness campaigns, they didn’t really think through how this would advance their cause, and it was rapidly dawning on them that they would most likely not be getting out of this adventure alive.

Collazo’s half of the operation didn’t go so great. He pulled the trigger on an officer guarding the house, before realizing he hadn’t loaded the gun properly. By the time he fixed the gun, the man was aware of what was happening, and Collazo got him in the knee instead of the back as planned. Three different Secret Service agents then fired on him, which was presumably the end of Oscar Collazo. Torresola, however, managed to shoot his target fatally. He fired four times into Officer Leslie W. Coffelt, getting him in the chest, which was presumably the end of Leslie W. Coffelt.

Well, it had to be, right?

Well, it had to be, right?

Torresola then made his way from the guardhouse to Blair’s entrance, taking down two more officers with non-fatal shots. But before he could get in the house, he got a bullet got in his head. You know how we said Coffelt was shot fatally? We weren’t lying; his wounds would kill him, making him the only person to die protecting a U.S. president (and Coffelt wasn’t even in the Secret Service, just a White House police officer). But first, he crawled out of his guard booth, killed Torresola with one shot, then crawled back and blacked out.

Truman was upstairs during all this, and he went on with his day afterward, saying, “A president has to expect those things.” Collazo, despite being shot a bunch of times, actually did survive the adventure. A judge sentenced him to death, then Truman commuted that to life, and President Carter later commuted the sentence altogether and released the man to Puerto Rico. Truman claimed that the assassination attempt actually moved him to reconsider Puerto Rico’s status. Then he pushed for a referendum in which Puerto Rican independence wasn’t even an option, so we guess that was just some classic Truman trolling.

A Teenager Lost Both His Arms And Still Managed To Dial For Help

On the afternoon of January 11, 1992, high school senior John Thompson was doing some work on the farm. He lived on a 1,600-acre property in a North Dakota town of 100 people, and no one was anywhere close when he got to work that Saturday. Both parents were out of town visiting relatives, so it fell to him to shovel the barley by himself. The grain moved thanks to a shaft powered by his tractor, a shaft that turned about 17 times a second. All was going great until he slipped on some ice and fell against this rotating shaft, and it tore off both his arms.

Shame this should happen to such an innocent kid. He was totally armless.

Republican Senators Pen Letter To Netflix Over ‘GoT’ Creators’ New Series ‘The Three-Body Problem’

Published

By

Republican senators have sent a letter to Netflix chief content officer and co-CEO Ted Sarandos pushing back against the streaming service’s upcoming series The Three-Body Problem. Netflix announced September 1 that Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are adapting Liu Cixin’s science-fiction trilogy The Three-Body Problem for the streamer with the help of The Terror: Infamy writer Alexander Woo and executive producers Rian Johnson and Rosamund Pike. The letter claims that by producing the series Netflix is “normalizing” the imprisonment of Uighur Muslims in China’s Xinjiang province.

The senators point to an interview Three-Body Problem author Liu Cixin gave in 2019 to The New Yorker in which he expressed approval over the imprisonment of Uighur Muslims. Human right abuses are reportedly taking place in Xinjiang province, including the detainment of over one million Uighur Muslims.

When asked in 2019 about imprisoning Muslims in Xinjiang, Liu Cixin responded, “Would you rather that they be hacking away at bodies at train stations and schools in terrorist attacks? If anything, the government is helping their economy and trying to lift them out of poverty.”

The letter to Netflix is signed by Martha McSally (R., Ariz.), Marsha Blackburn (Tenn.), Rick Scott (Fla.), Kevin Cramer (R., N.D.), and Thom Tillis (R., N.C.). The Republican members ask Netflix to rethink its working relationship with Liu Cixin considering his comments, while adding, “Does Netflix agree that the Chinese Communist Party’s interment of 1.8 to 3 million Uyghurs in internment or labor camps based on their ethnicity is unacceptable?”

“Netflix’s company culture statement asserts that ‘Entertainment, like friendship, is a fundamental human need; it changes how we feel and gives us common ground,’” the letter concludes. “This statement is a beautiful summary of the value of the American entertainment industry, which possesses innovation largely unmatched in the global market. We ask Netflix to seriously reconsider the implications of providing a platform to Mr. Liu in producing this project.”

Disney came under fire earlier this month for filming its live-action Mulan adaptation in parts of the Xinjiang province. The end credits of Mulan also include a “special thanks” to the “publicity department of CPC Xinjiang Uighur Autonomy Region Committee” and to the public security bureau in the city of Turpan, which is where detainment centers are reportedly in operation.

With the first installment of the Three-Body Problem series, Liu Cixin became the first writer in Asia to win the prestigious Hugo Award. The book is set during the Cultural Revolution when humans establish contact with an alien civilization on the edge of extinction. After the aliens invade earth, humans split off into two camps: one in favor of takeover by the superior aliens and the other determined to resist.

IndieWire has reached out to Netflix for further comment.

Marvel confirms premiere date in spooky trailer for Helstrom

Published

One of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s lesser-known (and mostly unconnected) releases, Helstrom, is due to drop next month, so now it seems like the perfect time for a trailer.

The final MCU TV show that isn’t part of Disney+ – it’s a Hulu exclusive in the United States – is a horror-themed affair focused on two siblings with a serial killer parent and some strange powers.

As you can see in the trailer, Daimon and Ana Helstrom (Tom Austen and Sydney Lemmon, respectively) are reunited when their mother (House of Cards‘ Elizabeth Marvel) starts acting up, and endeavour to stop some supernatural bad guys. Obviously there are plenty of people who are out to stop them.

While the editing and music are pretty clichéd when it comes to trailers, there are some lovely shots in this (the one with the flowers in particular is very nice), and some creepy spooks. There’s also plenty of snark, just to remind you that this is a Marvel joint.

Marvel moved into the horror genre on the film side of things with the Fox X-Men spin-off The New Mutants, which was perennially delayed before finally coming out in cinemas last month. Reviews for it were pretty negative across the board, so let’s hope that Helstrom fares better.

Helstrom will drop every episode on Hulu in the US on October 16.

Below Deck season 8 confirms release date and cast member return

Published

By

Below Deck has confirmed a very exciting return for season 8, with a big crew shake-up that includes the return of an original cast member.

The reality show will voyage back onto Bravo and hayu on November 3, with UK fans able to stream and download new episodes on the same day that they’re available in the US, just like Keeping Up with the Kardashians.

Cast member bosun Eddie Lucas will be back, despite not being seen on the ship since season three. He’s since achieved his 1600-ton license and he’s back to keep things ship-shape as mega-yacht My Seanna cruises around the Caribbean.

Another big change is the absence of regular Chief Stewardess Kate Chastain, who quit the show after filming ended on season 7. Kate had been a part of every season since season 2 and had become a fan-favourite, but she’s still keeping busy, as she’s landed a hosting gig on chat show Bravo’s Chat Room.

She’ll be replaced as Chief Stew on this season by Francesca Rubi, who has already admitted in the trailer for the new season – which you can watch above – that she does “take my job a little bit too seriously sometimes”.

The crew also features fellow newbies; chef Rachel Hargrove, stewardesses Elizabeth Frankini and Isabelle ‘Izzy’ Wouters as well as deckhands James Hough and Shane Coopersmith.

Also back is Captain Lee Rosbach, who is the only cast member to have appeared on every season.

He’s delighted to be back in the Caribbean, revealing in the trailer that he’s “missed the hell out of it” and that returning to the beautiful region is “like going home again”.

And while the trailer features lots of laughter and crew romance, there’s trouble brewing too. Captain Lee is seen telling a troublesome guest who has gone for a night swim that their charter “just ended”.

We also see tears and tensions in crew meetings, while the team learn about the arrival of the coronavirus pandemic from their friends and families back home.

As Captain Lee puts it: “The f**king world’s going to hell in a f**king handbasket.” Tell us about it, Captain.

Below Deck season 8 premieres on November 2 at 9pm on Bravo in the US and will also be available on hayu the same day in the UK.
