Herzog’s “Fireball’ Blends Film, Science to Capture ‘Awe of the Unknown’

Published

on

Werner Herzog says in his new film “Fireball: Visitors From Darker Worlds” that to be a scientist you need a sense of wonder. That’s a quality that’s been true of just about all of Herzog’s documentaries, and in researching the science of meteorites with Clive Oppenheimer, he aimed to capture the beauty that scientists feel when exploring the unknown.

“Fireball” melds the science and mathematics of meteorites and asteroids with the culture, religion and mythologies that have grown over millennia out of this fascination with these ancient objects from outer space. And by teaming up with Oppenheimer as they did on “Encounters at the End of the World,” Herzog asks bigger, more spiritual questions than just wondering where space rocks came from.

“Clive never has a boring moment in him, and it was very visual, very beautiful, but I knew it had to do with science, but with the awe of discovery, the awe of the unknown that’s coming at us from outer space, and all the questions involved, not only the mythologies,” Herzog told TheWrap’s Steve Pond at the Virtual Studio at TIFF. “It was clear there was something that had to do with great awe, which is innate in cinema and in science.”

Herzog and Oppenheimer travel to meteorite craters all over the world, from the Caribbean to India to Antarctica, and in each place they wanted to research more than just the terrain.

“I wanted to go to an impact crater where we wouldn’t just go to a hole in the ground. We would connect what we were seeing with deep oral traditions about the site, about a star that fell to Earth. The locations were guided by something that was cinematic and visual but also where we could entwine these themes of the natural phenomena with our cultural imaginations,” Oppenheimer said.

Oppenheimer then picked up a meteorite from off his shelf and explained just how much history and wonder is contained within that little fragment.

“You can’t touch an older object than this; this is four and a half billion years old,” he said. “There’s an immense sense of awe again that we have for these objects, and we chased them wherever they landed, whether it be in a museum or a dog kennel.”

But even the moments in “Fireball” in which scientists in glasses and lab coats explain the complexities of mathematics and geology, Herzog frames it all with a visual eye and that same sense of awe. In the film we see remarkable, colorful, microscopic designs on particles of space dust that would be impossible to naturally create on Earth.

“There’s wild, complete theoretical mathematical sorts of things and a field expedition into the middle of nowhere,” Herzog says of the film. “So there are not only impact craters or mythologies, there’s also pure mathematics that are beautiful to behold when you see it exemplified.”

“Fireball: Visitors From Darker Worlds” will be available on Apple TV+ later this year. Check out TheWrap’s interview with Herzog and Oppenheimer above.

The acquisition was worth $7.5 billion

Preorders for the Xbox Series X and S will be starting from tomorrow, and Microsoft just showed another ace up their sleeve. Xbox will be acquiring Bethesda Softworks and it’s parent company ZeniMax Media.

For those who are not aware, Bethesda is the publisher behind games like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Fallout, and Doom. These games will bow be included with Halo and Gears of War as first-party Microsoft releases and will be filling out the Xbox Game Pass service in the future.

More on the acquisition

Microsoft will be paying $7.5 billion in cash for the acquisition of ZeniMax Media. This will make Microsoft entitled to all of Bethesda’s properties along with their eight studios and 2,300 employees. They include Bethesda Studios, Id Software, ZeniMax Online, Arkane Studios, Machine Games, Tango Gameworld, Alpha Dog Games, and Roundhouse Studios.

In a blog post, Xbox head Phil Spencer wrote, “All of our work, and the foundation of our relationship with you, starts with a commitment to deliver a breadth of amazing games to discover and play on Xbox. Today is a landmark step in our journey together, and I’m incredibly energised by what this step means for Xbox.”

This has already become one of the biggest acquisitions in the history of video games, and we can see Microsoft’s strategy here clearly. Each game from Bethesda will be launching on the Xbox Game Pass subscription service. From this we can understand that the following games are going to be exclusive for Xbox and PC.

But a question that remains is concerning Deathloop, which is Bethesda’s PlayStation 5 exclusive. For that we will have to wait until further statements are released.

Irv Gotti Explains When And Why Tupac And Jay-Z’s Feud Began

Published

The hip-hop world can get contentious, as it was for Jay-Z in the ’90s. After Tupac’s release from prison and signing to Death Row Records, the rapper went after Jay-Z. Now Irv Gotti has explained when and why that feud began.

Guesting on Fat Joe’s The Joprah Show, Gotti was talking about Jay’s involvement in Notorious B.I.G.’s “Brooklyn’s Finest,” naming the track as the reason why Tupac developed an animosity towards Jay-Z: “That’s why ‘Pac was sh*tting on Jay, because of ‘Brooklyn’s Finest.’ […] Jay’s on the record with him, so now he’s like, ‘F*ck you, ain’t no n**** like me, f*ck Jay-Z,’ and he starts bombing on Jay.”

This mirrors what Napoleon, a member of Tupac’s Outlawz group, said in an interview earlier this year: “Biggie was on a Jay-Z album where Biggie was like, ‘If Faith [Evans] had twins she would have two ‘Pacs,’ get it, remember that? Like ‘Tu Pacs.’ So he was taking shots at ‘Pac on Jay-Z’s album. So, ‘Pac looking at it like, ‘I don’t give a heck, man. If you letting this dude on your album take shots at me, your my enemy now.’”

As for Jay, he didn’t just sit back and take it. In 2015, Jay-Z collaborator DJ Clark Kent confirmed the existence of a Tupac diss track from Jay, which was never released out of respect for Tupac’s death. Kent said, “It never came out, out of respect for the fact that he died. Jay did a record going at Pac, but right as it was about to come out, son died. We performed it, though, at the Apollo — the chip on Jay’s shoulder is so crazy that he had to perform it.”
