Jim Carrey is ‘SNL’s New Joe Biden

Saturday Night Live has found its Joe Biden. NBC has announced that beloved actor and comedian Jim Carrey will play the Democratic nominee throughout SNL Season 46, which returns for its in-studio premiere on October 3. The new season will begin with five consecutive shows, but hosts and musical guests have yet to be announced.

Longtime SNL boss Lorne Michaels broke the Jim Carrey casting news during an exclusive interview with Vulture previewing the show’s upcoming season premiere. “You’ll see the same people,” he said of Season 46. “Maya Rudolph is coming back, and Alec [Baldwin] will be back. And I think Jim Carrey is going to do Biden.”

“There was some interest on his part,” Michaels explained of Carrey. “And then we responded, obviously, positively. But it came down to discussions about what the take was. He and Colin Jost had a bunch of talks. He and I as well. He will give the part energy and strength, and … Hopefully it’s funny.”

In a press release, NBC revealed that Saturday Night Live will follow strict COVID-19 protocols as it returns to production, including drastically limiting its in-studio audience. “The show will work closely with Gov. Cuomo’s team” to determine exact audience numbers for each episode, says the company.

In addition, SNL has added three featured players to its cast for the upcoming season. The three new additions are:

  • Lauren Holt, an actor, comedian, singer, and improviser who performed with the Upright Citizens Brigade
  • Punkie Jackson, a comedian and writer whose recent credits include Space Force, CorporateAdam Ruins Everything, and Bill Burr Presents: The Ringers
  • Andrew Dismukes, a Saturday Night Live staff writer since Season 43

This story is breaking. More to come…

UK was hit with ‘100,000 cases a day’ at height of pandemic

The UK was likely being hit with 100,000 coronavirus cases a day at the height of the pandemic, the Government’s top scientist has admitted.

Tuesday marked the highest number of daily cases the country had ever recorded with 7,143 people being diagnosed. Today also marked the second time confirmed cases had jumped above 7,000 with 7,108 infections discovered

Chief Scientific Advisor Patrick Vallance confessed the current situation ‘is not under control’ at a Government press conference today – but warned it is impossible to compare infection rates to March as testing is now more widely available.

He said figures reported earlier in the year were ‘almost certainly a very big underestimate of the total’ and the real figure would probably be around 100,000 new cases on some days in March and April.

Mr Vallance said: ‘As Chris has laid out today, we are seeing quite fast growth in some areas of the country.

‘Unfortunately, as we’ve seen, not only are cases going up, we’re already seeing an increase in deaths. So things are definitely headed in the wrong direction.

‘I do want to make one comment though which is quite important. The number of cases that we’re seeing now are picked up because there’s much more testing.

‘The number of cases reported in March were almost certainly a very big underestimate of the total.

‘So it’s much more likely that back in March and April, at the peak of this, we were seeing over 100,000 cases a day at certain times. Whereas of course, you were only able to measure and report a fraction of that.’

It comes as the UK death toll jumps to 42,143 after another 71 deaths were reported in the past 24 hours.

The prime minister warned people can’t ‘throw in the sponge’ now ‘no matter how impatient or fed up’ they may be on Wednesday.

Boris Johnson has asked people to keep following restrictions, warning ‘costly’ measures will be needed if coronavirus continues to spread.

He said: ‘I have to be clear that if the evidence requires it, we will not hesitate to take further measures that would, I’m afraid, be more costly than the ones we have put into effect now.

‘But if we put in the work together now, then we give ourselves the best possible chance of avoiding that outcome and avoiding further measures.’

England’s chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty has also cautioned the country has a ‘long winter ahead of us’, as there is a ‘significant uptick’ in the number of Covid-19 patients entering hospital and being admitted to the ICU.

The figures are currently at a much lower level than the beginning of April but ‘definitely heading the wrong way’, he said.

Jake Gyllenhaal & Oscar Isaac Team for Making-Of The Godfather Movie

Francis and the Godfather will tell the tale of making the 1972 classic, with Oscar Isaac taking on the role of director Francis Ford Coppola. While The Godfather is heralded as a cinematic masterpiece now, it was not that way when the movie was being made. Paramount fought Coppola on nearly all of his decisions, which will be heavily documented in the movie as Jake Gyllenhaal portrays legendary former Paramount Studio head Robert Evans.

Barry Levinson takes on directorial duties of Francis and The Godfather from the Black List script by Andrew Farotte. “Out of the madness of production, and against all odds, a classic film happened,” Levinson said in a statement. Francis Ford Coppola, who is currently working on a new edit of Godfather: Part III, said, “Any movie that Barry Levinson makes about anything, will be interesting and worthwhile!” At this time, only Oscar Isaac and Jake Gyllenhaal have been announced to star in the movie.

In addition to Francis Ford Coppola and Robert Evans, Barry Levinson is going to have to find actors to portray Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Robert Duvall, James Caan, John Cazale, Talia Shire, and Diane Keaton. Plus, producer Albert S. Ruddy and Robert Evans’ right-hand man at Paramount, Peter Bart will need to be cast too. It sounds like casting the movie could be as hard as it was for Francis Ford Coppola to actually make The Godfather back in the early 1970s.

Echo Lake is a producer on the movie and the company’s Mike Marcus also spoke about Francis and The Godfather. He says, “Here was a young man who lived outside the system and every step of the way the system was telling him, ‘You can’t do that.’ But Francis never gave up on his vision and the result speaks for itself.” Paramount reportedly did not want Al Pacino to be included in The Godfather and fought hard against the casting of Marlon Brando, who had not had a box office hit in the years leading up to the production. At the time, Paramount was in desperate need of a box office hit, and they did not think that Francis Ford Coppola was going to be able to pull it off.

Marlon Brando went on to win an Academy Award for his performance in The Godfather. However, he boycotted the event and sent his trophy to Sacheen Littlefeather, “an Apache activist for Native American rights, as the actor protested Hollywood’s portrayal of Native Americans and the standoff at Wounded Knee.” The movie also ended up taking home Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay, so it was exactly the hit that Paramount needed, though it took a lot of fighting and perseverance from Francis Ford Coppola to get it made. Deadline was the first to report on Oscar Isaac and Jake Gyllenhaal starring in Francis and The Godfather.
