How Spatial Audio Works & Improves Listening Experience

Published

Apple’s AirPods Pro have features to improve the listening experience including Active Noise Cancellation, transparency mode, and now, spatial audio.

Apple recently rolled out a new feature called spatial audio to its AirPods Pro headphones that is intended to improve the listening experience. It joins a number of other features introduced at launch that differentiate the AirPods Pro to standard AirPods. The concept behind spatial audio is certainly clever, and so too is the technology at play.

In terms of tech specs, there’s not much between the AirPods Pro and AirPods, with both based on the H1 chip, weighing in at around the same, and providing similar battery life. Both also allow users to summon Siri for various questions or tasks if they want to. The biggest differences are the features they offer, with the AirPods Pro boasting a number of capabilities the AirPods do not. Active Noise Cancellation, from example, adapts to surrounding background noise, and a transparency mode allows users to hear what’s going on around them. They are also more sweat and water-resistant, and their fit is customizable, unlike the standard AirPods.

The addition of spatial audio to the feature-set of the AirPods Pro is intended to bring a “cinema-like surround-sound experience” to headphone audio listening. Its effect is intended to give users the impression of hearing sound coming from the “right place” when they are watching a show or movie. This should remain the case even as the viewer moves their head, with the sound-field being mapped to the intended point,. The result is the sound of an explosion, for example, that can be heard in the left ear but will move into the right as the user turns their head.

How Spatial Audio Works

To achieve this, Apple uses the accelerometers in the AirPods Pro to track the movement of the user’s head. By doing so, it can calculate how the audio should be effectively remapped. This is then done using a combination of directional audio filters and by adjusting the frequencies sent to each ear, creating what Apple calls an “immersive sound experience” and giving the impression that direction of the audio has changed.

Spatial audio will work with content encoded in 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound as well as Dolby Atmos. It will only work with audiovisual content from specific supported apps, though, and only certain Apple devices will support the features too. Listeners must have an iPhone 7 or later, or one of various compatible iPad models, as well as either iOS 14 or iPadOS 14 at the earliest. However, for those who can use it, spatial audio is an exciting addition to AirPods Pro.

“The Crown” is rounding out its main cast for its final two seasons, as Dominic West is in “late-stage discussions” to join the Emmy-winning Netflix series as Prince Charles (via Variety). The British royal became a main player on “The Crown” last season played by “God’s Own Country” breakout Josh O’Connor, who is reprising his role as Prince Charles in the upcoming fourth season. West is a television veteran thanks to roles on HBO’s “The Wire” and Showtime’s “The Affair.” The actor will take over Prince Charles for “The Crown” Season 5 and Season 6, which will follow the royal family into the 1990s and early 2000s.

West’s casting nearly completes the final cast overhaul for “The Crown.” The show’s final two seasons will feature Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II (taking over from Claire Foy and Olivia Colman), Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip (taking over from Matt Smith and Tobias Menzies), and Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana (taking over from Emma Corrin, who debuts in the fourth season). While “The Crown” showrunner Peter Morgan originally planned for the series to run for five seasons, he changed his mind earlier this year and extended the series’ final run into two seasons.

“As we started to discuss the storylines for Series 5, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons,” Morgan said. “To be clear, Series 6 will not bring us any closer to present-day — it will simply enable us to cover the same period in greater detail.”

The upcoming fourth season of “The Crown” will be the final run of episodes for Colman and the gang. Gillian Anderson is also joining the show this year as Margaret Thatcher. Netflix’s synopsis for the new season reads: “As the 1970s are drawing to a close, Queen Elizabeth and her family find themselves preoccupied with safeguarding the line of succession by securing an appropriate bride for Prince Charles, who is still unmarried at 30. While Charles’ romance with a young Lady Diana Spencer provides a much-needed fairytale to unite the British people, as the transformation from teenager to Princess of Wales takes place, it is anything but a fairy tale for Diana.”

“The Crown” Season 4 will debut Sunday, November 15 on Netflix

Every TV platform has to make hard choices — even Netflix, a company that made close to $2 billion in revenue last year. Sure enough, the streaming service hasn’t shied away from cancelling its low performers or even moderate hits (when it makes sense), especially in recent years.

Just this summer, for example, Netflix axed The Society and I Am Not Okay With This, and they aren’t the only Netflix originals that never streamed a sophomore season. Scroll down to see which other shows the platform canceled after Season 1.
