Is The Society canceled?
The Society premiered on Netflix in May 2019 and was a big hit. Netflix subscribers seem to love teen shows, especially those with a little extra drama, and The Society is definitely that. The Society season 2 was ordered by Netflix in July 2019, a relatively quick renewal.
The Society season 2 was scheduled to begin production in March 2020, but that production start date was postponed because of the pandemic.
We fully expected The Society season 2 to start filming this fall or even next spring, but in July 2020, Netflix canceled the series.
Even though the show was renewed for season 2, Netflix decided not to forward with the new season of the teen drama.
Despite fan petitions in support of the series, it looks like The Society will remain canceled at Netflix. There will be no season 2 for The Society.
Why did Netflix cancel The Society?
It’s an interesting question, and I think it has a relatively simple answer, at least from a business perspective for Netflix.
The Society was canceled for a few reasons, according to Variety. The series has a big cast, and they are required to be on-screen and in close proximity to one another a lot. That makes it very difficult to keep the cast and crew safe on-set.
Netflix, and other studios and production companies, have seen the cost of production increase during the pandemic, and that’s largely due to hiring more people to keep the cast and crew separate during filming and testing the cast and crew for COVID-19. That’s very expensive.
With a large cast and crew, it adds up very quickly. So, it sounds like, according to the Variety report, the budget would have been more than Netflix was willing to pay for the season.
The Society is not the only show that Netflix has canceled, at least partially, because of the pandemic. We just learned GLOW season 4, which was also ordered and ready to start production this spring, was canceled for similar reasons as The Society. I Am Not Okay With This and Teenage Bounty Hunters were two other shows that probably would have come back for new seasons if not released during this time period.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina also would have been renewed for Part 5 had the pandemic not happened.
So, unfortunately, no, The Society is not coming back for season 2.

Having access to real-time data is always important, but nowhere is data more vital than during unprecedented times. Severe weather, natural disasters, and equipment failures can damage or disrupt operations, creating costly situations and potentially endangering lives. So, how do we get back to normal operations faster?
With better information during incidents and better foresight of potential issues, utilities can not only respond to and correct the situation, but also compile and analyse data that can play a critical role in the success of a future digital transformation strategy. This effort has evolved over time with the adoption of real-time series data technology and infrastructure.
Join us for this live webinar as Bill McEvoy, Industry Principal for Transmission and Distribution at OSIsoft, explains how utilities can leverage real-time data to:
- Prevent and avoid redundant incidents
- Improve team-wide communication and collaboration
- Measure incident response effort and demonstrate incident management value
- Track continuous improvement and manage security risk within their critical control systems
- Minimise and optimise load balancing on SCADA and system security modelling systems
