Maher Says There Are Already Too Many Catholics on the Supreme Court

Published

on

BIll Maher used the “New Rules” segment in Friday’s episode of “Real Time” to talk about the thing that mostly dominated the news this week — the grossly hypocritical rush by Republicans to install Amy Coney Barrett on Supreme Court — and specifically, he argued that one of the problems with her appointment is that Catholics are already over-represented on that body.

Maher also spent some time arguing that despite claims by Republicans to the contrary, it is absolutely appropriate to discuss and criticize Barrett’s fundamentalist religious views, because “being nuts is relevant.”

“Democrats have to stop talking about packing the Supreme Court because it’s already packed — with Catholics,” Maher said at the start of “New Rules.” “Roberts, Thomas, Alito, Kavanaugh, Sotomayor and Gorsuch, who I count as Catholic because he was raised Catholic and is now Episcopalian, which is just a Catholic who flunked Latin. And once Mitch McConnell and company are done FedExing Amy Coney Barrett to the bench, seven of the nine justices will be Catholic.”

Maher added that he has “nothing against Catholics, except my entire upbringing,” and that his issue is how Catholics make up around 20% of the U.S. population. “If seven out of nine justices were Jews or Muslims or Buddhists, would that be okay? And if faith is this super important element of life as Barrett and her Republican supporters say it is, shouldn’t we have a healthier balance on our highest court?”

Maher continued, noting that the fastest growing religion in America is the lack of any religion at all, which includes Maher himself. “We are 26 percent of the country — not anyone here, but of the country. Where’s our voice on the Supreme Court?” he asked. “And atheists actually make better judges because we don’t have to work to separate church and state. We’re not torn between rational decision-making and what it says in the old book of Jewish fairy tales.”

That’s when Maher began to talk more specifically about Barrett and her fundamentalist religious views. “In 2006, Barrett told a graduating class of law students, ‘keep in mind that your legal career is but a means to an end… that end is building the kingdom of God.’ No, it’s not. That’s not the point of a legal career,” Maher said. “And you pundits earnestly debating whether she will vote to overturn Roe v Wade: of course she will. She’s been groomed since birth to overturn Roe v Wade. She’s like the terminator. A robot programmed to fulfill one task. Except she wasn’t sent from the future, she was sent from the past.”

“Because here’s the truth about Catholics in America. There’s two types: scary and not scary,” he continued.

“The vast majority,” Maher argued, are “not scary. Not doctrinaire. In fact, they’re famous for ignoring everything the Pope tells them not to do. They divorce, they use contraception, they have premarital sex, they have anal sex, sometimes all in one night.”

But what he called “another strain of uberconservative Catholics” are operating with “an agenda, and enormous and growing influence to achieve it,” he argued. “And it’s really about pining for a return to the middle ages when the church was the state. The attorney general is one of these people, so is the federalist society responsible for putting five justices on the court. The Knights of Malta and Opus Dei, whose members wear a little spiked chain around their thigh all day to remind them of you-know-who.”

“These old school Catholics, they play the long game,” Maher continued. “Amy Barrett has been on their radar since forever because she was raised in an extremist Catholic community called People of Praise, where a husband’s responsibilities included correcting his wife should she stray from the proper path. Uh huh. And where woman were called handmaids.” (This is true by the way.)

“Yeah, these are the folks who make Jehovah’s Witnesses go, ‘Shh, don’t answer the door.’ They speak in tongues, otherwise known as babbling.” Maher then showed a clip of 80s TV preacher and con artist Robert Tilton speaking in tongues, which sounded exactly like babbling.

“That wasn’t them doing it, but that’s what it is and they do it too, and now it’s on the court. It’s not wrong to call out nuts when shit is nuts,” Maher said.

Maher concluded by once again advancing his argument that it’s entirely appropriate to talk about Barrett’s fundamentalist religious views: “Amy Barrett this week said she had no strong feelings about climate change, but is very concerned about large belt buckles. Chuck Schumer said Democrats won’t make Barrett’s religion an issue, but they should, because being nuts is relevant.”

Anita Hassanandani, who is expecting her first child with husband Rohit Reddy, recently shared her views on Bigg Boss season 14. The actress has been a former co-star of BB 14 contestant Jasmin Bhasin. Read Anita’s opinion on Bigg Boss 14 here.

When Bigg Boss 14 premiered on October 3 (2020), with a concept, dramatic changes, and some new rules, the expectations of viewers soared higher. With Salman Khan promising to give a befitting reply to the year 2020, fans eagerly awaited to watch this “brand new ‘ season of the controversial reality show. Moreover, the addition of past contestants Hina Khan, Sidharth Shukla, and Gauahar Khan as seniors added to the curiosity of the audience.

However, even after the makers’ efforts, it seems like several viewers are not very happy with the outcome. It is already a known fact that Bigg Boss season 14 has ‘failed’ to make it to the top 5 in the TRP list. Now the season is in its third week. The seniors have also exited the house, leaving the command of entertainment with the contestants. However, the dose of fun and entertainment does not seem to match the expectations of people.

Just a few hours ago, popular Television actress Anita Hassanandani took to his Twitter handle to share her views on Bigg Boss season 14 and it seems she was quite ‘unhappy’ with it. Anita wrote, ‘Bigg Boss 14 mein voh baat nahi. Hoping for it to get better.’ Yes, the actress expressed her disappointment with this season of the Salman Khan- hosted show. While several users agreed with Anita’s views, others thought some BB 14 contenders are playing well.

Take a look at Anita’s on Bigg Boss 14 tweet here:

BigBoss14 mein woh baat nai…hoping for it to get better

For the unversed, Anita has worked with BB 14 contestant Jasmin Bhasin in Ekta Kapoor’s supernatural drama Naagin 4 opposite Nia Sharma. She is expecting her first child with husband Rohit Reddy and is enjoying her maternity time.

Comedy Couple Review: No Laughing Business

Published

Comedy CoupleOn: ZEE5Director: Nachiket SamantCast: Saqib Saleem, Shweta Basu Prasad, Pooja BediRating:

Comedy Couple is a name that’s enough to suggest what the film is going to present. The couple here is Saqib Saleem and Shweta Prasad, and the latter describes this pair as the first Comedy Couple in stage history. And since they both are in the same profession and that too at the same time, there are barely any chances of rivalry or professional jealously. So what could be the reason for conflict? The comedy itself!

One of their friends actually feels Deep is too funny in real, but loses steam when on stage. He and Zoya face other challenges as well, from gossipy neighbours to agony aunts, they bare all the storm and even pay the price for it. Bikas Ranjan Mishra, who has penned the story, and Raghav Raj Kakker, who has written the screenplay and dialogues, have kept the material light, and director Nachiket Samant treats their work with care.

It takes a while to embrace the on-stage and off-stage chemistry of Deep and Zoya, despite the earnestness of the duo, and it’s a unique casting choice, albeit with good actors. But it’s also ironic that the supposed first comedy couple in the country barely cracks a good joke when on stage. At best, it manages not to be as lame as Ranveer Singh from Befikre or as ghastly as Saif Ali Khan from Humshakals.

More fun is to be had when they face one turmoil after another back at home, from being caught kissing in the lift to being almost thrown out of their residency, these touches work better as the humour stems from their responses and reactions and the sharp lines that come out with ease and effortlessness. It’s all filmy in the end with slow-motion shots and dramatic background music.

The idea behind Comedy Couple is refreshing, only if it didn’t get jarring by the end. Making a drama about comedy isn’t a joke, after all.

Bigg Boss 14: Rahul Vaidya Angers Pavitra Punia Questioning Her Feelings For Abhinav Shukla; Punia Says ‘Need No Character Certificate’, Rubina Dilaik Hugs Her

Things got a little out of hand inside the Bigg Boss 14 house on Wednesday evening. Former Indian Idol winner, Rahul Vaidya entered in an ugly war of words with television actress Pavitra Punia. Rahul angers Pavitra as he questions her feelings for Rubina Dilaik’s husband, Abhinav Shukla, insinuating that she harbours a soft spot for him in her heart. This infuriates Pavitra no end. Punia who is in the Red Zone with Eijaz Khan, lashed out at Rahul mincing no words.

Pavitra tells Rahul that she doesn’t need to explain anything to him and in a fit of rage tells him that she does not need a character certificate from him. She further tells him that she will “smash his face.”

The discussion stems after a task when Pavitra gives Abhinav Shukla a better score than Rahul Vaidya. Meanwhile, with Toofani Seniors – Hina Khan, Sidharth Shukla and Gauahar Khan making an exit from the house, the contestants are going about their daily responsibilities and tasks without supervision.

Pavitra was recently in news when she hurled abuses at senior Gauahar Khan. Now out of the house, Gauahar opened up on the episode. “I wish she had the courage to abuse me to my face,” said Khan.

“Maybe I would have respected her for that. She literally hurled over 20 abuses. I could literally read her lips and decode what she was trying to say. I still wish her good luck,” added Gauahar.
