Titanic’s Ending Completely Screwed A Character (And Nobody Cared)

Titanic gave Rose and Jack the ending they deserved, but that also failed a character from Rose’s post-Titanic life. Let’s take a look.

Titanic gave the audience the ending they were looking for by reuniting Rose and Jack after her death, but by doing so, it also disrespected another character and nobody seemed to care about it. James Cameron had already made a name for himself in the film industry in the 1990s thanks to movies like The Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, and True Lies, but his biggest project at the time came in 1997 with Titanic, a romance-disaster film based on the accounts of the sinking of the RMS Titanic in 1912.

Titanic followed Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet) and Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio), two passengers from different social classes who fell in love aboard the famous ship during its ill-fated maiden voyage. The movie was a big success, both with critics and viewers, becoming the highest-grossing movie ever at the time (later surpassed by Cameron’s Avatar in 2010). Titanic was praised for its visuals and performances, and while some were captivated by the love story amidst the disaster, this was also a criticized point, as many found it to be weak. What many seem to forget, however, is one minor character in Rose’s life who the movie completely screwed.

When viewers met Rose, she was introduced as “Rose Calvert”, as she married a man with that last name at some point. When the audience was taken back to 1912 to meet young Rose, her fiancé Cal Hockley (Billy Zane) was introduced, but even though their names sound similar, as the story progressed it was revealed that he never married Rose. By the end of Titanic, Rose explained that Cal killed himself after losing his fortune in the Wall Street Crash of 1929, and after the death of Jack, she had a fresh start under a different name. Rose did what Jack made her promise she would do and got married, had kids, and died many, many years later. Rose married a man named “Calvert”, who she never told about Jack and who didn’t have a place in her memories, as when the camera panned over all the photos she brought with her, Mr. Calvert was nowhere to be seen.

The final scene in Titanic saw Rose – in what some still debate if it’s her arrival to the afterlife or just a dream – reuniting with Jack at the Titanic’s Grand Staircase, surrounded by those who died on the ship. Whether the afterlife or a dream, Rose went back to Jack, showing she never got to love someone else as much as she loved Jack. Rose never found the comfort she had with Jack with anyone else, and though she said she loved the mysterious Mr. Calvert, he was left aside the whole time. Mr. Calvert was only there to fill the gap of what happened to Rose after the Titanic sank and Jack died, showing that she managed to move on (to an extent), and even though it was the longest, most stable relationship she had, it will never be more important than her two-day romance with Jack Dawson.

Of course, this can be justified in different ways, such as the afterlife Rose ended up at being one for those linked to the Titanic in a deeper way (certainly, Cal wouldn’t be there), described by some as the “Titanic Club”, or, simply, by the movie being all about Rose and Jack’s story, with Mr. Calvert being just a character added to explain Rose’s post-Titanic life, and thus didn’t deserve much attention. Still, and because his existence was acknowledged (although briefly), Titanic’s ending did Mr. Calvert wrong, and everything about him remains a mystery.

Lily Allen Says She’s Ready To Have Kids With New Husband David Harbour! Awww!

Sounds like Lily Allen is already ready to take the next step with new husband David Harbour, even though the pair has only been wed now for about a month!

The 35-year-old star sat down for a brand new interview that was published this weekend by The Sunday Times, and in it, she opens up quite a bit about her big, blended family — and her apparent desire to add to it, like, right now!

Speaking about her hunky husband, who the star wed in a ceremony last month in Las Vegas, Allen didn’t exactly hold back about the family planning aspect of the whole thing. Already a mom to daughters Marnie Rose, 7, and Ethel Mary, 9, the British singer answered in the affirmative when it came time to respond to whether she’d want kids with Harbour, too:

“I think so. Especially now Marnie’s getting so big. It’s like, ‘No, my babies!’ I do [miss having little kids run around]. I miss little terrors running around the house.”

Awww! Haha!

Even though kids are definitely on the radar for the Smile singer and her talented Stranger Things beau, however, it sounds like they will wait at least a couple years before getting pregnant again. Allen ultimately admitted:

“I’m in a really good place. I don’t know if I’d mess with my hormones, at this particular point.”

Fair enough!

The singer recalled:

“We went to the Wolseley — I’m so posh! — and there’s this middle table in the middle section that’s underneath a [massive, restaurant-defining] clock, and I remember looking at him, and it reminded me of Leonardo DiCaprio in Titanic, you know? When she’s going to meet him under the clock. And, by the way, it was my first date ever. I had never been on a date! I was so anxious. He was, like, ‘Have you been here before?’ and I said, ‘Yeah, I love this place, my kids love the pancakes here,’ and he was, like, ‘Oh, you have kids?’ He just didn’t want me to think he’d been googling me. So he lied. I was, like, ‘F**k you!’”

LOLz! Sounds like a good time was had by all, then!

And the rest, of course, is history as these two quickly swept each other off their proverbial feet and bounced down the aisle quickly enough into happily ever after.

And soon… children! Well, pretty soon, anyways!

Weekly Ketchup: Sam Worthington takes on Dracula, George Lucas takes on fairies

This week’s Ketchup features stories about new roles for Sam Worthington, Robert De Niro, Mel Gibson, Zac Efron and Miley Cyrus, as well as new movies for the director of X-Men Origins: Wolverine and musician-turned-director… “Weird Al” Yankovic!

George Lucas is venturing forth into the world of musicals with an untitled CGI animation film that is currently in preproduction at Skywalker Ranch. The only details that are currently known is that the musical involves fairies, and the music will come from a variety of sources. Kevin Munroe (TMNT and the upcoming Dead of Night) is directing from a script by David Berenbaum (Elf, The Haunted Mansion), and George Lucas is of course producing, and may have also come up with the movie’s original story idea. This CGI musical joins Lucas’ other current project that he is producing (but not directing), which is Red Tails, the story of the Tuskegee Airmen, starring Terrence Howard, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Method Man.

Although Avatar may have been a huge success even without it, much credit is being given to 3D for its box office records, and Hollywood is going crazy with ideas on how to make their next big movies jump on the 3D bandwagon. First up, there is the unconfirmed rumor via MarketSaw that the long-in-development Gremlins 3 project might be getting new life as a stereoscopic 3D project, as might Ghostbusters 3. In the more confirmed realm, there’s also Warner Bros, which has moved the release date of Clash of the Titans back a week to April 2 to facilitate an adaptation to 3D. The studio is also now planning on releasing the two parts of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in 3D when the movies are released on November 19, 2010 and July 15, 2011.

Drag Race Holland’s eliminated queen on becoming Tiger King’s Joe Exotic for Snatch Game

*This article contains spoilers from episode six*

Drag Race Holland’s eliminated queen ChelseaBoy discussed choosing to portray Tiger King star Joe Exotic during Snatch Game.

ChelseaBoy shocked us all when she was told to sashay away from the show after a fierce fight.

From her incredible make-up to her choice to transform into Joe Exotic during the famous Snatch Game while other queens chose Dutch celebrities, ChelseaBoy has kept us on our toes.

However, it wasn’t enough to keep her in the competition after an intense episode which included a makeover for her best friend.

‘I think snatch game is very much about culture and and to have a big pop culture reference in there, I think would work really strong. Yeah, that’s why it paid off as well.’

The 26-year-old said that the queens were told to prepare both an international celebrity as well as a Dutch one, but was ultimately glad she went outside the box.

ChelseaBoy prepared a Dutch character from an old 80s TV series, but didn’t want to disappoint fans of the show.

‘I’m so happy I didn’t do it because the people from the 80s would know it so well, that they would have been very picky,’ she continued. ‘So I’m super glad with my final choice.’

ChelseaBoy and her best friend arrived on the runway in the latest episode working their interpretation of Mars Attack!

The only difference were the pointy cone boobs, and we loved every second of it.

It might not have been enough for the judges, but it’s enough for us to keep our eyes peeled for what comes next.

Drag Race Holland continues weekly on Thursdays at 11pm on WOW Presents Plus, for more information visit:
