Recent UFC signee Michael Chandler spoke to the media before UFC 254.
Just days before UFC 254 in Abu Dhabi, recent UFC signee and former Bellator lightweight champion Michael Chandler spoke to members of the media. Long considered one of the top fighters in the world outside of the UFC, Chandler represents a massive free-agent signing by the UFC. Chandler is not scheduled to compete at UFC 254, but he is at Fight Island, will weigh in, and will serve as a replacement, if needed, in the event’s championship headliner between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Justin Gaethje.
In the event Chandler isn’t needed as a replacement at UFC 254, he’s already eyeing an opponent for his promotional debut: former interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson.
UFC 254 back-up fighter Michael Chandler welcomes a fight with Tony Ferguson in his UFC debut.
“I think he’s down to fight. I think I’m down to fight. I think that’s the perfect fight to introduce to the UFC fans, to who I am,” Chandler said. “I think Tony Ferguson is the scariest guy in the division, ya know. He’s got a screw loose and he fights like it, and it’s admirable. I think that would be a great introduction fight for me.”
Currently ranked no. 3 in the division, Ferguson would be a stiff test for Chandler’s first fight in the UFC, but that’s precisely why Chandler is interested. Ferguson lost his last bout — an interim title fight against Gaethje — but prior to that, Ferguson had racked up an impressive twelve consecutive wins in the UFC’s deepest division.
“It’s a scary fight… Stepping into the cage against Tony Ferguson is a fight that scares me, which is exciting. I want to feel that, I want to look across the octagon and feel a little bit of uncertainty because that’s where I thrive.”
